The countdown has begun to The Edible Garden Show – the first-ever national event dedicated exclusively to ‘Grow Your Own’ fruit and vegetables.

People wishing to visit this must-see event can take advantage of specially discounted tickets if they book now. The Edible Garden Show 2011 promises to be an unforgettable occasion to meet the phenomenal public demand for home-grown produce and healthy eating.

The show will debut at Britain’s most famous horticultural venue, Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, over three days from 18 to 20 March 2011. Tickets are priced at £13 for adults, £11 for children with special concessions for senior citizens, students and group bookings.

However, visitors booking in advance qualify for a 15% discount with adult tickets priced at £11 and child tickets at just £9. Finally, we have had some decent rainfall. It has been incredibly dry and we were looking in danger of becoming the Lake District without lakes. As June progressed even the larger rivers were beginning to dry up. Many farmers have been carrying water to their stock as the smaller becks had long dried up. Families in our village with private supplies have been watching every drop. When we think back to the major flooding in November it is unbelievable to think our reservoirs are running low.

The waterfowl have not had much water to splash in but made the most of the down pours. We have had a good hatching of ducks but the geese have been disappointing. The early ducks are a good size and we are now able to sex the ducks and drakes. For those of you who don’t know the ducks are the ones that quack. I have to say not everyone believes you when you tell them this!

It has been busy time farrowing, with two litters of British Lops and a cross bred litter to the Large Black sow. We are thinking next time we will use the Large Black boar standing at AI and have another pure bred litter of Large Blacks.

Some of the Hampshire litter have gone off to their new home. A fantastic location in the Patterdale Valley where once they are accustomed to their new owners they will have a huge enclosure to root up. We are getting used to the notching system but just to be sure had a large piece of paper with ears drawn on and a mark where the notches were to go!

In June we went to the Cheshire Show with three British Lops, a young boar and gilt and a sow. We were very pleased with two firsts and a second plus two Reserve Breed Champion with the British Lop boar and the Hampshire gilt. Next it was the Great Yorkshire. The number of entries was up probably due to the demise of the Royal and the rain managed to keep off until later in the day. The British Lops were well represented but despite four exhibitors the Hampshires were put with the Any Other Modern breeds. We don’t have a show now until the Westmorland County in September.

There has been a lot of interest in the pig keeping courses. We have had leaflets at most of the major Northern shows. We have a new website for the courses, so take a look – www.pigkeepingcourses.co.uk.

NEWSLETTER – Summer 2010

Hello!

Woo hoo – summer is here and it seems ages since I last wrote!  The girls and I love the weather.  Colin the shearer visited us last week and we all have beautiful new haircuts.  Bonita is so relieved that she has kept her signature topknot – otherwise some of the boys get her muddled up with Adora.  We told the silly little boys in the field next door that the shearer was called Sean … and they believed us!

We have been SO busy birthing, everywhere you turn there is a little cria running around and annoying its aunties.  We’re on J’s this year and so far we’ve had:  Jennifer, Jessica, Joseph, Jip, Juliet, Jasmine, Josie and Jasper – phew!  More girls than boys, so our humans are happy!  They’re all really gorgeous … but seem to have heaps of energy!

We’ve been to Watermoor School Fete in Cirencester, which was brilliant.  The children loved us and the weather was wonderful.  We’ve been to a Young Farmers Rally in Tytherton and the Gotherington Pony and Dog Show near Cheltenham.  Everyone loved the little boys that went and by all accounts they were on their very best behavior.  We’re also off to the Cricklade show again this year in August and fingers crossed for fine weather.  Oh – and we had 24 brownies visit us from the 2nd Kemble Brownie Pack and last week BB was adopted by a lady in Essex as a present for her husband on their ‘woolly wedding anniversary’!  I said to Bonita, they must mean cashmere?  Surely they can’t be comparing our beautiful fleeces to wool?

An odd-looking animal joined us last week, he is called Billy and the studs have told us he is a goat.  He has big curly horns, makes a strange bleating sound and likes licking salt!  I think he wants to be friends with us but we’re all a bit scared.  The chickens don’t mind him and appear to be multiplying by the minute.  There are now two sets of chicks in the show paddock; they’re quite sweet really.  There is lots of grass this time of year and the buttercups keep growing too.  We hate buttercups, so do our humans.  The weather is a bit cooler today but some days we’ve just stayed under the trees in the shade – even without our coats on.

Think that’s everything that has happened here apart from the usual fencing (which is never ending), chain harrowing, topping and general maintenance around the farm.  Mine is the next baby due but not until August.  I’m really looking forward to getting my figure back.

Just off to keep an eye on the crias playing on the mound – their mums appear too busy munching grass.  I’ll write again soon,

BBC2 is preparing to shine a light on the demanding, unpredictable and diverse world of smallholding by challenging 10 novice couples to take on their very own small farm. Filmed over the summer the programme will see the couples learn just the basics they need, before decamping to a farm in the beautiful British countryside where they will be discovering all areas of farm life, from animal husbandry to coping with the often not so glorious summer weather. The series will culminate in the winning pair getting the opportunity to live and work on their own small farm more permanently, forging ahead with smallholding towards their owns dreams. Applications are being welcomed from couples of all ages and relationships from married couples to siblings and friends, however an obvious passion for growing food, caring for animals, sustainability or food is must for the show, as the BBC would like it to be a credible and hopefully successful small holding partnership that comes out of the project. They certainly won’t be shying away from showing just how tough smallholding can be or underestimating what a test this will be for the rookies, however for the right people it should be a wonderful and life changing opportunity.

Ill health forces sale of this delightful self sufficiency project in the dairy farming area of N W Mayenne.

The south facing house was renovated in 2004/5 with main works by local artisans to French standards. The large dining kitchen is light and airy and open to the office/music room.
